Post-Nut Clarity

Post-nut clarity usually refers to the sudden sense of clarity or emotional distance a person might get just after orgasm. This term is typically used to refer to orgasm and ejaculation in people with penises, although people of all genders experience this phenomenon to some degree. This shift can feel like a reset — the desire passes, and things feel clearer or more grounded again. It is sometimes also associated with a feeling of disgust or even immorality. This is especially true after solo sex. However, exactly what post-nut clarity feels like can vary widely by individual. A survey of 223 women and 76 men found that more than 90% experienced "post-coital symptoms," but these symptoms were surprisingly varied. ### Why Does Post-Nut Clarity Happen? There may actually be a biological reason for this shift. Dopamine levels tend to peak during orgasm, and then crash. This is followed by a rise in a hormone called prolactin, which may suppress the ability to ejaculate. Prolactin is also known to make people feel calm, grounded, and emotionally softer. Some people have also theorized that the feeling comes from the restoration in blood flow to the brain following orgasm. Finally, orgasms are known to release stress. This in itself can change people's perspective and the way they're feeling. ### Origins of the Term This term is internet slang that first started appearing online as early as 2012. It was likely popularized by Alex Cooper on her podcast "Call Her Daddy" in 2018. "Nut" has long been used as slang for ejaculation.
