Cuttlefish Method

The "cuttlefish method" is a form of consent violation where a person, known as a cuttlefish, pretends to be a someone's friend to grow closer to them romantically. The cuttlefish is often assumed to be a male, because male cuttlefish pretend to be female as a mating strategy. However, this could happen between two people of any gender. The cuttlefish hides their attraction, acting as a platonic friend, in the misguided hope that the object of their affection will eventually develop romantic feelings or, at minimum, grant them sexual access. The cuttlefish may also offer advice and encouragement subtly aimed at undermining a current partner, hoping to take their place. This deception circumvents a person's ability to consent to engage with the cuttlefish romantically, undermining trust and genuine connection.
