Rope Dojo

A rope dojo is a space that is dedicated to forms of rope play and is used to host different events like rope jams, peer rope, or rope workshops. Many rope events are also held in non-dedicated spaces, but rope dojos tend to be more dedicated to that type of play and have features to support that. "Rope space" and "rope dungeon" are synonyms of rope dojo, but rope dojo is used more often. ### Common Features of a Rope Dojo - Suspension points and bamboo for suspension bondage. - Mats on the floor to increase safety (in some cases tatami mats). - Some even have Hashiras for specific kinds of Japanese bondage. ### Origins of the Term The term "dōjō" (道場) comes from Japanese and refers to a hall or place of learning and meditation. It literally translates to "place of the Way" from Japanese and comes from its use in martial arts. From there, it was used in Japanse bondage by Bakushi to connect it to martial arts and its origins in Hojōjutsu. The term has grown its use outside of Japan to also be used for spaces in the West as Japanese bondage spread over the world. ### Common Norms and Values - Generally the spaces are more tranquil, no loud shouting or loud conversations are appreciated. - Do not touch other people's rope without consent, this includes stepping on rope. - Do not interrupt people who are tying. They are engaged in risky play and breaking their concentration can increase the risk. - No outdoor shoes are allowed. This is to protect the mats, but also for hygiene reasons as people play on the floor.
