Queer Femme

A queer femme is usually a person who is both queer and femme, and who embraces feminine gender expression within a queer identity. This may include women, non-binary people, or transfeminine individuals who identify as queer in terms of sexual orientation, gender, or both. To break it down: - Queer: A broad term for non-heterosexual or non-cisgender identity (can refer to sexuality, gender, or both). - Femme: A term for feminine identity or presentation, especially when it’s intentional. While the term queer femme combines these two identities, it actually more than that. People who use this term often embrace the interplay of queerness and femininity as part of their identity. In other words, femininity is considered part of their queerness. They're not doing femininity to fit into a straight world, but see it as part of who they are as queer people. Queer femme identity is different from traditional ideas of femininity. It’s often a deliberate and powerful way of expressing who someone is. But because many people assume that being feminine means being straight or passive, queer femmes can be overlooked or misunderstood - both in straight spaces and in queer communities.
