Demimasc

Demimasc (short for demimasculine) is a gender identity used by some people who partially, but not fully, identify with masculinity. Demimasc people experience masculinity as part of their gender rather than their whole identity. A demimasc person may feel connected to being masculine or male in some way, but not completely. This can include people who are non-binary, genderfluid, or otherwise outside the traditional categories of “man” and “woman.” ### Origins of the Term Demimasc comes from the prefix “demi-,” meaning “partially” or “in part.” The term developed within online LGBTQ+ and gender-diverse communities as people looked for more precise ways to describe experiences of gender that don’t fit entirely within traditional categories. It is part of a broader set of “demi-” identities, such as demiboy and demigirl, which describe a partial connection to a gender. These terms became more widely used in the 2010s through social media platforms, forums, and community-driven resources focused on gender identity.
