BDSM-Oriented

BDSM-oriented (sometimes BDSM-sexual) refers to a person whose primary or significant sexual and romantic attraction is linked to BDSM dynamics, roles, or power exchange. For these individuals, BDSM is not just an activity but a core part of how they experience desire and connection. The term is sometimes used by people who feel their sexuality is fundamentally tied to kink. For example, it might be used by someone who is masochistic, sadistic, dominance-focused, submission-focused, or requires pain, bondage or discipline to get off. In this case, the term doesn't so much describe the types of people a BDSM-oriented person is attracted to but the way they get turned on. Some BDSM-oriented people report that vanilla relationships do not meet their needs, or that attraction is difficult to access without elements of power, control, or negotiated play. For a minority, BDSM is the only way sexual or romantic intimacy feels fulfilling or authentic. For these people, kink dynamics are central to their being attracted to another person. There is a paper published in Current Sexual Health Reports that gives a good overview of the research on BDSM as an orientation. The research suggests BDSM may function as an orientation for some individuals, rather than as a hobby or preference alone. Some see this orientation as controversial, worrying it might blur distinctions with LGBTQ+ identities or echo past attempts to label queer orientations as inherently sexual or inappropriate. Other people see a BDSM orientation as affirming because they feel their kinkiness is a central part of their sexual identity, much like sexual orientation.
