Vers

Short for "versatile", this refers to a person who can take on either a Top (giving) or bottom (receiving) role. The degree of preference for one or the other varies - some people who have a strong preference may use terms like vers top or vers bottom to communicate it. It is different from switch in that it does not mean to alternate between dominant and submissive roles only giving and receiving. Although the term's meaning has been used more broadly in recent times, some communities only use this term to refer to those who enjoy both giving and receiving during anal sex. Some indicate a stronger preference in one direction using terms like "vers top" (preferring to give but open to receiving) or "vers bottom" (preferring to receive but open to giving). The term is primarily used in dating and hookup contexts to communicate sexual role preferences. More broadly, "versatile" can be used to communicate a general openness to exploring new kinks, acts, and roles. ### As a LGBTQ+ community role In the LGBTQ+ community, both vers and the full term (versatile) is used to describe being a partner who will give and receive penetration during sex.
