Vanilla

Vanilla is a term used in the kink community to refer to a person with no identified kinks or fetishes. This term is also sometimes used as a shorthand to refer to people who are not part of the kink lifestyle, or even to refer to the non-kinky part of a kinky person's life. For example, a kinky person might refer to their day-to-day obligations, such as their job, family, and interactions with non-kinky friends as their "vanilla life." Someone who is vanilla engages predominantly with more “tame” or mainstream activities. They may prefer less intense play and to stay in their comfort zones. Being kinky exists on a spectrum. Some people aren't kinky at all, some people have lots of kinks, and many people exist somewhere in the middle. Those who consider themselves mostly vanilla but dabble in kink may also refer to themselves as "vanilla with sprinkles." ### Origins of the Term The term “vanilla” in BDSM and kink communities originates from broader English slang where “vanilla” came to mean “plain,” “standard,” or “conventional.” This was in reference to vanilla ice cream as a default flavor. This usage became common in the mid-20th century and was later adopted by emerging BDSM and leather communities in the late 20th century (particularly from the 1970s onward) as a way to distinguish mainstream sexual practices from alternative or kink-based ones. As organized kink communities developed and later expanded online in the 1990s and 2000s, “vanilla” became a widely used shorthand to describe people, relationships, or activities that do not involve kink. Today, the term is generally used descriptively.
