Vaginal Atrophy

Vaginal atrophy is a medical term used to describe a thinning, drying, and/or inflammation of the vaginal wall. It is generally caused by hormonal imbalance. The most common reason for vaginal atrophy is age, though other causes of hormone imbalance can also cause this to occur. AFAB transgender people who are on testosterone are particularly prone to this. Vaginal atrophy can cause painful penetrative sex. ### Symptoms of Vaginal Atrophy Symptoms of vaginal atrophy include vaginal dryness and irritation, uncomfortable or painful penetration with potential mild bleeding, reoccurring UTIs or bacterial vaginosis, and potential shortening or tightening of the vaginal passage. ### Vaginal Atrophy and Sex Atrophy does not mean the end of giving or receiving pleasure. It just means exploring new ways to have sex. For instance, using lubricants, engaging in more extended foreplay, or experimenting with different positions can make things more comfortable - and therefore more fun! Non-penetrative sex can be a great alternative too. Be sure to maintain open communication with your partner. And consider consulting with a healthcare professional for potential treatments, such as hormone therapy or vaginal moisturizers. ### Treatments The most common treatment for vaginal atrophy is estrogen cream, which is applied directly to the vagina. The amount is small and localized enough that even in AFAB transgender people, it will not generally affect testosterone levels.
