Sword Play

Sword play is a form of edgeplay that uses a sword as a symbol of power, a threat, or a part of role play. It is similar to knife play, only it uses a sword. Sword play can include medieval-esque roleplay, but not always. ### Why People Are Into It People may decide to try sword play for a number of reasons. Here are a few of them. ### Power and Fear The sense of danger produced by steel near the body can heighten a submissive's sense of surrender - and the Dominant's authority. ### Aesthetics and Role Play Swords carry historical and fantasy vibes that fit right into some people's favorite role play scenarios. ### Sensation Steel can produce cold, pressure, weight and other sensations. ### Safety and Consent Sword play can be extremely dangerous, which is why it is typically considered edge play. Real blades can cause catastrophic injury - even death. Here are a few key tips for safer play. - Use props: Some sword players use dulled swords or even wooden or plastic stage replicas to create a similar scene with less risk. - Use extreme caution: Avoid face/neck/eyes/groin. Use flat-of-blade pressure only (with dull props). - Negotiate carefully: Agree on what touches are allowed (sheath only? tip off-limits?), target areas, positions, pace, “theatre vs contact,” and hard stops. - Safe words and signals: Have a nonverbal safe signal (hand drop/object) plus a verbal safe word. Tops should also watch for signs of distress. - Emergency plan: Keep a first aid kit handy and have a charged phone nearby in case of emergency. Some people keep their sword sheathed during play, only drawing it from its sheath for the auditory effect. Illusion play is also an option here.
