Split Attraction Model (SAM)

The split attraction model (SAM) is a framework that separates attraction into multiple, distinct categories that can be experienced independently. This model proposes that romantic and sexual attractions are distinct, and can be experienced independently. It was developed to provide a language for people whose attractions do not align in the way that is assumed by conventional norms. The model defines several key types of attraction: - Romantic Attraction: The desire to be in a romantic relationship with someone. - Sexual Attraction: The desire to have sex with someone. - Platonic Attraction: The desire to be in a close, non-romantic, and non-sexual relationship (like a friendship). - Aesthetic Attraction: An appreciation for someone's appearance or visual appeal, with no desire for a relationship. - Sensual Attraction: The desire for non-sexual physical contact, such as cuddling, holding hands, or hugging. This model is a crucial tool, particularly for the aspec community, because it provides a precise vocabulary to describe a person's unique internal experience of attraction. For some people, this may not include romance or sex, but may still involve other forms of deep connection. From the perspective of how social relations ae formed, maintained, and changed, the split attraction model is what provides the precise language for understanding one’s internal attractions. This allows a person to intentionally design their social relationships around those specific attractions, without being forced into a pre-set template that prioritizes one over the other.
