Power Neutral

Power neutral describes kink or BDSM interactions that do not include a power hierarchy, meaning neither partner takes on a dominant or submissive role. In BDSM, Top and bottom typically describe who is performing an action and who is receiving it, not who holds authority or control in a relationship. A Top performs the action (for example, tying rope, giving impact, or directing an activity). A bottom receives the action. These roles are activity-based, while Dominant and submissive are power-based roles involving authority, control, or hierarchy. Because of this, many Top/bottom scenes are power neutral. The people involved are simply collaborating on an experience. Neither person has authority over the other. However, Top/bottom play is not always power neutral. In some dynamics: - The top is also the Dominant, directing the scene and exercising negotiated authority. - The bottom is also the submissive, giving up some control as part of the experience. In these cases, the scene includes both activity roles (Top/bottom) and power roles (Dominant/submissive). Power-neutral play usually emphasizes: - Collaboration: Partners negotiate activities together rather than one directing the other. - Mutual participation: Both people remain equal participants in shaping the scene. - Focus on sensation or experience: The emphasis is often on physical or emotional experiences rather than authority or control. For example, someone might enjoy receiving impact play, bondage, or other intense sensations but not identify as submissive. ### Power Neutral vs. Vanilla Play Power-neutral kink is sometimes mistakenly described as “vanilla,” but the two are not the same. Power-neutral play can still involve BDSM activities such as bondage, impact play, or sensation play. The difference is simply that no power exchange or hierarchy is involved.
