Olfactophilia

Olfactophilia (also called osmolagnia, osphresiolagnia, or ozolagnia) is a paraphilia in which individuals derive sexual pleasure from smells and odors. People are most often aroused by body odors, such as genital scents, sweat, and semen. However, research has found that other smells can cause arousal. In a study on men, lavender + pumpkin pie (+40%), black licorice + doughnut (+31.5%), pumpkin pie + doughnut (+20%) delivered the best results. A similar study on women found that candy + cucumber (+13%), baby powder (+13%), pumpkin pie + lavender (+11%), baby powder + chocolate (+4%) had an effect. ### Origins of the Term "Olfacto" coms from the Latin "olfactus," meaning “the sense of smell," while "philia" means "love" or "affection." The term was coined in the 19th–early 20th century, when Greek- and Latin-derived medical terminology for “sexual deviations” was being systematized. ### Why People Are Into It The nose contains special smell receptors that detect body odors and possibly pheromones. When odor molecules pass through, they’re picked up by these receptors and sent as signals through the olfactory nerves to the brain. This system doesn’t just help us smell - it also affects who we feel attracted to. Like many animals, humans use subconscious scent signals in choosing partners, meaning smell can play as big a role in attraction as looks do.
