Jarl

Jarl is a Gorean term for a free man, most often used by slaves (bondmaids) to address men in the northern cultures described in "Marauders of Gor" by John Norman. As used in the book, every free man of Torvaldsland is to be addressed by slaves as "Jarl". As such, it is not exclusively used as an indication of nobility. In the Gorean lifestyle, "Jarl" functions similarly to "Master," but is culturally specific to the rugged, Norse-inspired society of Torvaldsland. It denotes a free man who holds authority over slaves, though not necessarily ownership, similar to how "Sir" might be used more generally in English, or how "Earl" has been used in world history. Some people in the BDSM and Gorean communities adopt the title "Jarl" to reflect their role as a dominant figure, particularly when embracing Gorean traditions of honor, strength, and companionship.
