Gags

A gag is a generic term covering various materials and devices placed in and/or over the mouth of a bottom during BDSM or sex play. They are designed to restrict the use of the mouth, making clear speech difficult and muffling other sounds. A gag may be improvised using items on hand - such as fabric (scarves, stockings, ties, etc.), rope, or tape - or may be a purpose-built accessory of which there are several common types. ### Types of Gags - Ball gag: A plastic or rubber ball placed in the mouth behind the teeth with a strap through the ball (or attached to its sides) then secured around the back of the head. - Bit or bar gag: A plastic, rubber, or leather bar placed between the teeth and then secured around the back of the head with straps attached to the ends of the bar. - Forniphilic gag: A gag made for objectification to which various objects can be attached. This could be a dildo, or pocket pussy, but also toilet brush, feather duster or ashtray. The concept is to turn the mouth into something to be objectified. - Funnel or tube gag: A gag (often made of rubber) that includes a tube going through into the mouth that can have a funnel attached for inserting liquids into the mouth of the wearer by force. This can also sometimes be done using a ball or panel gag. - Inflatable gag: A rubber gag that includes an inflatable element for the mouth that can be increased in size using a small pump. - Jennings gag: A metal set of frames around two hinges on each side of the mouth that includes a ratchet at least on one side to keep it open. The metal frame is places between the front teeth and opened. The metal frame can be covered with rubber or silicone to protect the teeth. - Muzzle gag: An over-the-mouth gag commonly made out of leather and held in place with a full head harness. - Pacifier gag: Pacifier of various sizes and shapes. Usually made of latex or silicone. In addition to the function of silencing the subject, it also serves for oral stimulation. It may not necessarily be associated with age play. - Panel gag: An over-the-mouth gag very similar to the muzzle gag, but without the extensive head harness. - Pecker or penis gag: A panel or ball gag that includes a dildo shape on the inside for insertion into the mouth. - Ring gag: A rubber or metal ring placed in the mouth and secured with straps. This keeps the wearer's mouth open and accessible for insertion of objects. - Spider gag: A metal ring placed in the mouth secured with a strap with additional spikes coming out of the mouth, preventing the wearer from flipping it in their mouth. ### Safety & Consent Since verbal signals are harder to make with a gag, the use of a manual signal like dropping an object held in the bottom's hand may be established before the scene starts in order to give the bottom a more reliable way to communicate that something needs attention during the scene. The harder a gag makes it to breathe through the mouth, the more care needs to be taken that the nose is not also blocked, whether through face coverings or issue like congestion due to allergies.
