Faggot

Faggot refers to a man who is physically, romantically, and/or emotionally attracted to other men. While existing sexual orientations like "Homosexual" are clinical and "Gay" is the social standard, "Faggot" is a reclaimed slur. It is used by many in the kink and queer communities to take on an identity that is more radical, transgressive, or flamboyant than the mainstream gay identity. Where a "gay" might seek to fit in, a "faggot" often seeks to stand out. Faggot is often used to embrace the very things society once used to shame gay men., such as being "too feminine," "too sexual," or "too flamboyant". ### Political and Historical Context Faggot is a term that has been reclaimed by the gay male community in response to the term historically used pejoratively as a homophobic slur by those outside the LGBTQ+ community. In that sense, identifying as "faggot" can be considered an act of political resistance. ### Caveats Because faggot remains a highly charged word, its use is strictly dependent on personal preference and enthusiastic consent. It should never be used toward someone unless they have explicitly claimed it as their own identity.
