Cyborg

Cyborg traditionally describes a person who explores identity, aesthetics, and bodily transformation through cybernetic or mechanical enhancements. These transformations can be real or imagined, and often emphasize the experience of gradual modification and the erotic possibilities of merging flesh with technology. ### Origins of the Term The contemporary use of the term cyborg comes largely from feminist theorist Donna Haraway, who expanded the idea in her 1985 essay "A Cyborg Manifesto." Haraway describes the cyborg as “a hybrid of machine and organism, a creature of social reality as well as a creature of fiction.” This suggests the cyborg goes beyond literal implants or mechanical body parts to include the ways people merge with technology, information networks, and social systems. In this view, a cyborg is someone who blends biology with constructed identity and technological life. Metaphorically, Haraway uses the cyborg to show how identity can be fluid, blended, and open to change, instead of locked into one category.
