Because of this overlap, the meaning of courtesan can vary depending on context and how the person using the term defines it. ### Origins of the Term The word courtesan comes from the Italian "cortigiana," meaning “a woman of the court." It originally referred to companions who were associated with royal or noble courts during the Renaissance. Over time, the term became linked to women who provided companionship, conversation, and sometimes sexual relationships to wealthy patrons. Because these figures combined social companionship and sensuality, the term gradually took on a dual meaning of both refined companion and high-status sex worker.
