Bastinado

Bastinado is a form of impact play where the the soles of the feet are tortured. Sometimes also referred to as foot torture, foot whipping, or falanga/falaka, bastinado is commonly done with canes, but other stick- , paddle- , or flogger-like implements are also used. Bastinado is used as a form of discipline, punishment, or erotic torment, especially for masochists who enjoy stingy, localized pain. Because the soles of the feet are extremely sensitive, even light strikes an be very intense. It is typically done with the person restrained, lying face-down or on their back with feet elevated. ### Origins of the Term The practice has been found in writings in Europe as early as 1537, but may stem from Spanish "bastonada" (“beating with a stick”) and entered English in the 1570s. At this time, it referred to a beating of the feet or buttocks, usually with a short stick. The oldest references to the practice itself date back to 960 CE China. ### Why People Are Into It The feet have many nerve endings, and produce a sharp, distinct pain. Bastinado is also associated with punishment or interrogation, a dynamic many Dominants and submissives enjoy. Finally, having the feet exposed can feel humiliating or deeply submissive. ### Safety & Consent Bastinado is relatively safe, but striking too hard can damage tendons, bones, or nerves. It's a good idea to start with less intensity and progress slowly to a degree of intensity with which both partners are comfortable.
